If images of soldiers standing watch at the demilitarized zone illustrate the ongoing tension between North and South Korea, a new video posted to YouTube captures that conflict in the changing nature of beauty trends within the two countries.

In the fourth instalment of its series “100 Years of Beauty,” Cut.com focuses on popular looks in Korea from the 1910s to the 2010s.

The minute-and-a-half-long time-lapse video shows model Tiffany Lee having her hair and makeup done before she shows off each style for the camera.

After showing off her 1940s look of powdered skin, red lips and soft waves in her hair, the screen slowly splits as the stylists work on her next look, which is really two looks. For the 1950s and onward, Lee gets two styles, reflecting the country’s divide into two following the Korean War.

On the South Korea side of the screen, Lee sports a fashion-forward hairstyle and makeup that reflects modern trends. Her North Korean looks are decidedly more conservative and definitely not trendy, including military hats and plain makeup.

For her last South Korea look, Lee sports a wavy blow-out, heavy eyeliner and large gold hoop earrings. Her last look for North Korea is her hair tied back with a pearl hairband, pink eyeshadow and pink lipstick.
