OTTAWA -- A youth facing terrorism charges in Kingston, Ont., appeared in court Tuesday for the first day of a two-day bail hearing.
The youth was charged in late January after a Canadian police investigation sparked by a tip from the FBI, and he has been in custody ever since.
The identity of the accused can't be revealed under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act and a publication ban is in place on all evidence, submissions and reasons presented during the bail hearing.
The accused appeared in court Tuesday wearing a burgundy shirt and matching sweat pants, a green coat and worn black sneakers. He was accompanied in and out of the courtroom by police officers who attached ankle restraints and sometimes handcuffs on the youth.
He was attentive during the proceedings, but often sat slouched with his head down, focusing his gaze mainly on his interpreter.
The RCMP have laid two charges against the youth. He is accused of knowingly facilitating a terrorist activity and counselling another person to "deliver, place, discharge or detonate an explosive or other lethal device" in a public place. Police said no specific target had been set before they moved in.
A 20-year-old man was arrested at the same time as the youth, but was released hours later.
The bail hearing was adjourned after a full day of proceedings Tuesday. It was anticipated it would to take two days for the proceedings, which resume March 29 in Kingston.
