The opposition in Nova Scotia is praising proposed cyberbullying legislation, but says it could have been enacted long ago.
Liberal education critic Karen Casey says the new Cyber-Safety Act should help protect young people, but that the NDP government could have introduced the measures more than a year ago.
Justice Minister Ross Landry announced the legislation yesterday.
He says it would include an investigative unit dedicated to pursuing and possibly penalizing cyberbullies.
But Casey says it will take up to six months to set up the unit.
Progressive Conservative Leader Jamie Baillie is also lauding the legislation, but says the NDP should have done it sooner.
Landry says the act would allow victims of cyberbullying to seek a court protection order that could result in someone having their computer or phone confiscated.
The legislation comes three weeks after the death of Rehtaeh Parsons, a 17-year-old Halifax girl who allegedly endured months of cyberbullying.
