KINGSTON, Ont. -- A federal inmate is facing nine charges, including three counts of attempted murder, after a shooting at a Kingston, Ont., hospital that left one person with serious injuries.
Police say the incident took place on Monday, when the 32-year-old inmate was brought to the Kingston General Hospital after being found unconscious at a correctional institution.
They say the man, who had been escorted to the emergency room by two correctional officers, was initially co-operative and his handcuffs were removed so he could use the washroom.
Police say when he left the washroom, before he could be handcuffed again, the man allegedly reached out and grabbed a gun from the holster of one of the correctional officers.
They allege the two officers tackled the inmate to the ground and the gun went off during the struggle, with a bullet hitting someone in the hospital. A second round then went off, with the bullet hitting a wall before the accused was brought under control.
Police say Corey Ryan Ward is facing nine charges that include three counts of attempted murder and three counts of discharging a firearm with intent to wound or endanger life.
The person who was shot suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.
The Kingston Health Sciences Centre, which operates the hospital, said the emergency department was locked down during the incident but returned to regular operations after the situation was brought under control.
It said the hospital brought in social workers and counsellors to support patients, families and staff in light of the incident.
