CANMORE, Alta. - A unit that reviews deaths involving police says a robbery suspect shot by RCMP officers west of Calgary was carrying a fake gun.

Clif Purvis of the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says the 62-year-old man was carrying a replica 9-mm Smith and Wesson handgun when he got out of his vehicle.

Several shots were fired by two officers, and two bullets hit the suspect in the chest.

He died in hospital a short time later.

The man was being investigated for three armed robberies in the mountain community of Canmore.

Purvis says there were five civilian witnesses to what happened and the investigation continues.
