A celebrity chef and a former NHL star are among 54 new recipients of the Order of Canada announced Thursday.

Gov. Gen. David Johnston released the list of appointees to the order, which recognizes outstanding service to Canada.

Toronto chef Jamie Kennedy was cited for promotion of Canadian cuisine and the use of organic, sustainable and local food.

Former Vancouver Canucks captain Trevor Linden was honoured for his leadership on and off the ice. His famous No. 16 jersey was retired by the Canucks.

The new appointments include 12 Officers of the order and 42 Members, the Governor General's office said in a news release.

Poet, novelist and publisher Nicole Brossard, of Montreal has been named an Officer of the Order of Canada, along with broadcaster Shelagh Rogers, of Vancouver.

Veteran hockey broadcaster Howie Meeker was among those made members of the order, along with Canadian tennis great Daniel Nestor.

Other recipients included retired Calgary oilman Gwyn Morgan and former Bank of Montreal CEO Tony Comper, who was honoured along with his wife for their volunteer work.

More than 5,000 people have been invested into the order since the award was established in 1967.

"The Order recognizes people in all sectors of Canadian society. Their contributions are varied, yet they have all enriched the lives of others and made a difference to this country," the Governor General's release said.

Recipients of the award will be invested into the order at a ceremony at Rideau Hall early next year.
