Fifty nominees have made it through to the Bon Appétit shortlist for its Best New Restaurant award of 2016, with the North American food publication featuring everything from a food truck in Charleston through to a French-Mexican brunch hangout in LA.

"We love restaurants that are driven by passionate people with distinct points of view," said the magazine's deputy editor Andrew Knowlton.

"These places aren't cookie-cutter. They're absolutely authentic to the cities where they're based. We want to recognize restaurants that showcase hard work, genuine hospitality, and delicious food."

Winners are to be announced on August 16 with the publication of Bon Appétit's September issue.
