Teen charged with impaired driving and assaulting a police officer

A teenager from Guelph will need to find a new way to get around after police slapped him with a 90-day driving ban for impaired driving.

The Guelph Police Service said they received a report about an erratic driver on Ingram Street around 8:20 p.m. Wednesday. The caller told police three young males were inside the vehicle and the driver had crossed into oncoming traffic before mounting a curb.

Officers weren’t able to find the vehicle.

More than an hour later, they received another call about the same car being driven erratically on Eramosa Road. This time officers were able to find the driver and pulled the vehicle over.

They said the driver appeared to be unsteady on his feet and the two passengers were passed out. Officers found several vaping devices and an open bag of cannabis in the car.

The driver was arrested and taken to a police station where an officer trained in drug recognition determined his ability to drive was impaired by drugs. The teenaged driver was then taken to hospital for a blood sample to be drawn, but he refused to comply and kicked an officer in the leg twice.

The 17-year-old was charged with impaired driving, refusing to comply with a demand and assaulting police. He received a driving ban and his vehicle was seized for seven days.
