Guelph officer dragged by fleeing car

Guelph Police are looking for two suspects who were in a vehicle that dragged an officer on Monday.

A caller reported a possible theft on Woodlawn Road West around 12:15 p.m.

In the parking lot outside the business, the officer saw two males in a black Mercedes.

Police said the officer angled his cruiser to block the vehicle, then went up to the driver and asked him to hand over the keys.

When the officer reached for the keys, the driver suddenly reversed the Mercedes, and the officer was dragged with it.

Police said the officer was not seriously hurt.

The driver of the Mercedes was then able to maneuver around the police cruiser and the vehicle sped off.

Police said the identities of the driver and passenger are known to investigators.

A third man was arrested as he left the business. Police searched him and found crystal methamphetamine. When questioned, the name and date of birth given officers matched the driver’s licence he was carrying, but police later discovered it was stolen. They also learned the man was currently on bail, with a “condition not to possess identification unless it is in his name.”

The 26-year-old from Caledon was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of stolen property, police obstruction and failing to comply with a bail order.
