Water gun prompts weapons call in Guelph

Guelph Police say a weapons call Wednesday morning turned out to be a misunderstanding.

Someone reported seeing what they thought was a gun in a vehicle travelling on Stone Road West around 11:10 a.m.

Officers tracked the vehicle to College Avenue West, which is close to two high schools, minutes later.

Police said they conducted a high-risk traffic stop. At gunpoint, they removed five teens from the vehicle one-by-one.

Inside a backpack, officers discovered the weapon.

They said it was actually a water gun which was designed to look like a Glock 19 handgun.

Police said the teens, who ranged in age from 16 to 19, were cautioned about their behaviour and given a warning about the “potential risks of displaying what could be mistaken for a real firearm.”

The teens were not charged.
