Four Canadians killed in Texas car crash

KYLE, Texas - Authorities say four people from Canada including an infant have died in a fatal wreck caused by a motorist driving the wrong way on a Texas highway.

Police say the collision occurred early Friday morning on Interstate 35 south of Austin.

Police say it involved three vehicles and was triggered by one travelling south in the northbound lanes in the community of Kyle.

Kyle municipal spokesman Jerry Hendrix says two men, a woman and a baby in a minivan died at the scene shortly after 1 a.m. Two other children in the minivan were hospitalized with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Police have identified the dead as Margaretha Wall Hildebrandt, 27, Heinrich Martens, 31, Gerhard Hiebert Peters, 30 and 16-month-old Jacob Wall Hiebert.

A spokeswoman with the Kyle Police force says investigators believe the Canadians are from Ontario but they did not immediately have further information.

Hendrix says the driver of a Honda Civic travelling in the wrong direction is hospitalized in critical condition.

The driver of a pickup also involved in the wreck was treated at the scene.
