Nearly 40 years after his appearance in one of the worst awkward interviews in television history, Prince Charles has released a congratulatory video that recreates the legendary bloopers.

In 1977, soon after the show "Countdown" took to the airwaves, the Prince of Wales was interviewed by TV host Ian "Molly" Meldrum.

Meldrum was so terrified at the time, he admitted to his Royal Highness that he was "sweating like a pig."

Prince Charles appeared amused, even asking Meldrum, "Do you not have one of these teleprompters," to which the tongue-tied journalist said he didn't.

In the interview, Meldrum attempts to introduce Prince Charles before nervously asking producers for a glass of water.

The Sydney Morning Herald later branded the interview "one of the greatest car crash interviews in Australian television history."

Almost 40 years later, Prince Charles has now released a video that pokes fun at that original interview.

"There is an old show business saying which warns never to work with animals or children," Charles begins. "But nobody prepared me for Molly Meldrum."

He added, "Was it really 40 years ago? It only seems like yesterday. I wish it were tomorrow, I’d cancel it."

Prince Charles also joked that that he learned a lot of "new Australian words" that day as Meldrum kept swearing after forgetting his lines.

The swear-word-laden outtakes leaked on YouTube a few years ago.

Recalling the interview, Meldrum said he didn’t regret it "but I definitely stuffed that up."

"Countdown" is an Australian Broadcasting Corporation program that has featured acts including John Mellencamp, Blondie and Cyndi Lauper, and helped in the success of such Australian bands as AC/DC and Men at Work.

"We're absolutely thrilled His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales has taken time out of his Royal duties to help us celebrate Countdown's birthday with us," said ABC Director of Television, Richard Finlayson, in a Sydney Morning Herald article. "His sketch highlights HRH's keen sense of humour and the obvious affection he has for Molly and Countdown."

Of course, it is no secret that Prince Charles has a sense of humour.

Two years ago he presented the weather forecast on BBC Scotland and even included an unscripted joke at the end.

The Australian network will show the interview and this recent video as part of a two-part documentary special called Countdown: Do Yourself A Favour that will air starting next weekend.
