Joe Simpson was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) last weekend.
The 54-year-old showbiz patriarch -- the father-and-manager of Jessica and Ashlee Simpson -- was stopped by officers on Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, at around 10 pm on Aug. 4 and the police thought he was intoxicated so arrested him.
Simpson was booked and spent the rest of the night in a cell. He was released at 9:41 am the following day and did not have to post bail.
According to gossip website TMZ.com, the case has not yet been sent to prosecutors in the Los Angeles City Attorney's office yet.
However, if criminal charges are filed, Simpson is unlikely to receive any jail time as it is his first offense so he would probably just receive a fine.
While Simpson was arrested for DUI on Saturday, his daughter Jessica -- who gave birth to daughter Maxwell Drew in May -- was discussing how she now opts for water instead of alcohol at weekends.
Daughter Jessica tweeted: "Responsibility has drastically changed my life! Saturday night drink of choice ... WATER! :) (sic)."
