The annual White House Correspondents' Dinner is traditionally an opportunity for the U.S. president to poke fun at himself and the American media.
But Canada also garnered some comic attention this year, thanks to the antics of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and pop singer Justin Bieber.
Feature comedian Joel McHale, best-known for his role as Jeff Winger on the television series Community, poked fun at the ongoing Ford scandal during the annual black tie event Saturday night.
“It’s a thrill to be here in Washington, D.C., the city that started the whole crack-smoking mayor craze,” he said, referring to former D.C. mayor Marion Barry, who was arrested on drug charges in 1990.
“People say that Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is a clumsy mess, but he can’t help it,” McHale said. “He’s a big guy. He’s like a bull in a crack-pipe shop.”
McHale then roped in Bieber and Calgary-born United States Senator Ted Cruz.
“Between Rob Ford, Justin Bieber and Ted Cruz, you just want to tell Canada, ‘Hey, relax. We already have a Florida.’”
Saturday’s White House Correspondents' Dinner was the 100th anniversary of the event.
