Two-year-old child dead after collision in Hinton

A two-year-old child is dead after being hit by a vehicle in Hinton, Alta.

Hinton RCMP and emergency crews were called to the collision at Switzer Drive in Hinton at around 11 p.m. Saturday.

According to RCMP, the two-year-old girl had been hit by a vehicle. She was taken to Hinton General Hospital, where she died of her injuries.

"The driver has been identified and stayed at the scene until RCMP arrived," said RCMP Staff Sgt. John Haley.

CTV News has uncovered documents that show the collision happened in a high-traffic area that’s been of long-standing concern to residents.

A letter dated May 1, 2012, from the Woodland Court Condo Board, expressed concern over the amount of truck traffic in the area.

The writer states concerns were first raised to town officials back in 2004 and expresses frustration over the lack of progress.

The letter calls for construction of an 8 foot barrier that would separate the complex from the road.

Town officials have said they will take concerns into account as they conduct an engineering review that’s set to wrap up this fall.

Mounties say no names involved in the collision are being released at this time as police continue to investigate.

They do not believe speed and alcohol are factors in the collision.
