'The officer said that he slipped back and fell on the ice and he had to shoot him': Police shooting witness

New details on police shooting A man who witnessed the deadly police shooting gave CTV News new details about the encounter that ASIRT is now investigating.

A man who witnessed the ‘encounter’ where an Edmonton police officer shot and killed a man is giving new details about what happened Thursday afternoon.

Aman Jaggi was inside his home in southwest Edmonton when he heard screaming outside his window.

“Within seconds of that I just heard four gunshots,” Jaggi said. “I opened my blinds and I looked over and I saw a cop over a body.”

After speaking to the officer who pulled the trigger, Jaggi filmed an officer attempting to resuscitate the victim.

“Once he pulled him over, the man in the vehicle came at him with a hunting knife and the officer said that he slipped back and fell on the ice and he had to shoot him,” Jaggi said.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team said the victim – who sources tell CTV News is 55-year-old Vitaly Savin – was confirmed dead on scene.

ASIRT also confirmed a large knife was recovered near Savin’s body.

Police conducted a traffic stop after multiple citizens called EPS with a possible impaired-driving complaint.

“There were two separate 911 calls from citizens both indicating that the driver of the vehicle was swerving all over the road, and possibly impaired,” EPS Deputy Chief Kevin Brezinski said.

The officer involved is a six-year veteran, and he is on an administrative leave as ASIRT investigate.

The investigation will focus on the circumstances surrounding the encounter that resulted in the officer discharging his firearm.
