Safety tips for enjoying Edmonton this summer

The City of Edmonton said it’s expecting an influx of visitors for the summer after being named one of Lonely Planet’s Top 10 cities to visit in 2025.

Friday, it released some rules and guidelines to help residents and visitors to safely enjoy what Edmonton has to offer this summer.

River safety:

• Anyone enjoying the North Saskatchewan River must wear a lifejacket or approved personal floatation device at all times.
• Motorized watercraft can only be launched or removed at approved locations.
• Boaters must obey all boating regulations.

Large events and entertainment districts:

• Permits are required for any special events or gatherings of more than 100 people.
• The city can help plan smaller neighbourhood events, such as block parties, for which permits are also required.
• Fireworks are illegal to set off without a permit. Any illegal use can lead to fines up to $10,000 and criminal charges.
• Alcoholic beverages can be consumed on the street in the Rice Howard Way Entertainment District, but must be bought and drunk within the boundaries.

Transportation:

• Riders need to have proof-of-payment at all times on Edmonton public transit.
• Blue emergency phones on transit platforms and stations can be used to contact security.
• E-bikes, e-scooters and bicycles are not allowed on sidewalks for anyone over 16.
• Riding and parking e-bikes and e-scooters is not allowed on Whyte Avenue between 112 Street and 97 Street.

Other safety considerations:

• When using a public space, avoid blocking entrances, crowding walkways or riding bikes in indoor spaces.
• Don’t feed wildlife and respect animals by not disturbing dens, nests or eggs.
• If you see someone with an item or weapon, such as knives or bear spray, call 911.
• Homelessness street outreach teams can be reached by calling 211.

As motorcyclists return to the roads, the province is also providing some safety reminders.

According to the Government of Alberta, about one-third of crashes involving a motorcycle end in death or injury. That’s compared to one-in-10 for all other crashes.

Drivers in a vehicle are asked to take care when driving around a motorcyclist, because they are smaller and less visible.

Motorcyclists are reminded to stay focused, drive defensively and avoid blind spots. Riders should have proper training on a motorcycle and should wear proper gear, such as leathers, closed shoes, eye protection and a certified helmet.

In 2022, there were 33 fatal crashes involving a motorcycle and another 229 crashes resulting in major injuries.
