Regimental funeral procession, road closures and detours

CTV Edmonton: City prepares for regimental funeral Constable Daniel Woodall will be honoured tomorrow with a procession and full regimental funeral.

City of Edmonton officials announced several downtown road closures and detours in preparation for Constable Daniel Woodall’s memorial and regimental funeral set for Wednesday.

Officials said starting Tuesday at 11:30 p.m., 107 Street will be closed to traffic between 99 Avenue and Jasper Avenue – re-opening Wednesday at around 11:30 a.m.

Jasper Avenue will also be closed to traffic between 95 Street and 108 Street starting at 2 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, due to the funeral procession. The closure will be in effect until 1 p.m.

However, according to officials some north and south crossings will be allowed in that area prior to 8:30 a.m.

Grierson Hill will also be closed to traffic between 101 Avenue and McDougall Hill beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday – officials said that area will be re-opened at around 3:30 p.m.

Commuters are encouraged to avoid driving into downtown Edmonton on Wednesday – major delays will occur.

Officials said free Edmonton Transit System (ETS) service will be offered to anyone travelling to or from the memorial service or procession. As such, service adjustments will be made for routes operating along or crossing Jasper Avenue between 95 Street and 108 Street as well as Grierson Hill and 107 Street.

LRT service will be free June 17 and will operate at peak service from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to accommodate extra passengers.

Northlands officials said free parking will be available at select lots on Wednesday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The public is invited to view the funeral procession from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The procession will start at the Alberta Legislature building and proceed north along 107 Street to Jasper Avenue.

The convoy will then continue east on Jasper Avenue to 95 Street, before proceeding down Grierson Hill toward the Shaw Conference Centre (SCC) for formal services.

For safety reasons, officials are asking people to stay on sidewalks along the route. Grierson Hill will be closed to the public.

The regimental funeral and celebration of life will begin at 11:30 a.m. at SCC – members of the public are invited to attend, however space will be limited.

Inspector Gary Godziuk said while EPS would love to have every member of the public who wants to attend the service be able to, there likely won't be enough room.

"We expect that there is going to be an enormous law enforcement contingency in the procession, and of course, their preffered seating at Shaw," Godziuk said.

Nicole Poirier, civic events director with the city, said following the procession at 11:30 a.m., supporters are invited to watch a live broadcast of the memorial on big screens.

Members of the public are encouraged to wear blue clothing.

United in Light and the EPS wives association will be decorating the procession route in blue ribbons.
