Man struck by limousine and killed

An unidentified man was struck and killed on Gateway Boulevard in Edmonton early Monday morning. Police examine the limousine involved in the fatal accident.

A young man is dead after being struck by a limousine on Edmonton's south side early Monday morning.

Edmonton Police said that around 2:25 Monday morning a man in his late teens or early twenties was struck and killed by a limo heading north on Gateway Boulevard.

Police are unsure why the young man was on the roadway around 34 Avenue. It’s believed that the man wandered out in front of the limousine.

The limo was apparently heading back from the airport, and would possibly not have seen the man on the road due to rain.

Police are looking for assistance from the public as they investigate what happened and to confirm the identity of the victim.

“We haven't been able to identify our victim yet,” Sgt. Gary Lamont with Edmonton Police Service said Monday. “He had no identification on his person so if anybody has a loved one that is unaccounted for, we'd like them to call police.”

In a news release, the victim is described as a young Asian male, around 20-years-old.

Gateway Boulevard was shut down to traffic between 23 Avenue and 34 Street while investigators worked to determine the cause of the crash, but reopened just before 7:00 am.

This unknown victim is the ninth to be hit and killed by a car in 2012.
