‘It’s a labour of love’: Edmonton Oilers superfan continues decade-long pledge to not cut hair before a Stanley Cup win

An Oilers superfan from Sherwood Park is going on year 10 of waiting for a Stanley Cup win before he cuts his hair. CTV News Edmonton's Marek Tkach reports.

An Oilers fan who hasn’t cut his hair since 2015 is continuing to grow his hair until his team brings home the Stanley Cup.

Jeff Ottmeier of Sherwood Park has a pregame ritual of standing on the corner of Baseline Road and Sherwood Drive before every Oilers game, donning a jersey and a blue and orange wig over his 10-year-grown locks.

“I’ve been doing this since 2021 – no matter how many times I come out, I get horn honks. I get smiles. I get, ‘Let’s go Oilers,’ out the window,” Ottmeier told CTV News Edmonton on Friday.

With his hair not seeing shears for just under a decade, the superfan is hoping this year will be when the Oilers raise Lord Stanley’s cup in triumph.

“I think right now we just have to take it game by game … we’re all hoping that the Stanley Cup will come back to the City of Champions,” he said.

Even taking it game by game, Ottmeier said he could change his tune on when the locks come off.

“It’s a labour of love, it’s one that I am going to continue to do, but at the same time, I’d love to get it off. Maybe contact Wigs for Kids and get this hair on a child that needs it,” he said.

“We’re at the 10-year mark and obviously, I’d like to see it on somebody rather than on my head.”

Even with the blue and orange falling behind in the 2-0 series, Ottmeier remains hopeful about the Oilers facing off against the Los Angeles Kings.

“We’re going to come back and we’re going to make it 2-1, and we’re going to do it again Sunday night.”

The Edmonton Oilers will face the Kings on home ice for the first time in the series Friday at 8 p.m.
