Guilty verdict for Edmonton man who set multiple fires in Alberta Avenue area

Darcy Willier was found guilty on 12 of 16 arson and firearms charges in an Edmonton courtroom on Thursday. CTV News Edmonton's Amanda Anderson has the story.

The verdict has been handed down in the trial of an Edmonton man who was accused in a string of arsons in the Alberta Avenue area.

Darcy Willier was charged with setting 10 fires between 2021 and 2022, as well as six firearms offences.

On Thursday, a judge found him guilty of three counts of arson with disregard for human life, three counts of arson causing property damage and six counts of possession of firearms charges.

Willier was found not guilty of one count of arson with disregard for human life, but guilty on the lesser charge of arson causing property damage because the judge found the Crown hadn’t proved the initial charge.

The judge found him not guilty on four other counts of arson causing property damage.

During the trial, court heard a police theory that Willier was directed to set the fires by notorious and now deceased Edmonton landlord Abdullah Shah, also known as Carmen Pervez.

As the verdict was read, the judge said it was important to address each arson count individually because of the significant amount of evidence produced.

A sentencing date has not yet been set.
