Edmonton celebrating long weekend with a splash

Edmonton’s outdoor pool season kicks off Saturday, should the weather agree.

On Thursday, the city announced spray parks would be opening for the long weekend in addition to Wîhkwêntôwin Outdoor Pool.

District spray park locations will open first. That includes at City Hall, where a Splash Day event will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

It includes family-friendly entertainment and activities, as well as a Movies on the Square screening between 3 and 5 p.m. The city said hours may be changed in case of poor weather, such as heavy rain or lightning.

“Splash Day is the kicking off of all the activities that we’re going to see over the next number of months, including opening up all of our outdoor pools earlier than we have in the past,” said Mayor Amarjeet Sohi.

“Edmonton is a phenomenal city year round, but it’s more phenomenal and exciting and fun during the summer months.”

All of Edmonton’s 78 spray parks – including a new one in Schonsee – will be open by June 6.

The Fred Broadstock and Queen Elizabeth pools are scheduled to open on June 7. Borden Natural Swimming Pool and Mill Creek are expected to open on June 21.

The city said reserving a swim time can “ensure fast access” at outdoor pools. Reservations will be available starting June 26, with swimming lesson registration opening June 3.
