Alberta 'Freedom Convoy' lead truck driver charged with assault, mischief after altercation

The lead driver of a "Freedom Convoy" of trucks that travelled through central Alberta last week is facing assault and mischief charges following an altercation with a motorist, RCMP say.

On Feb. 3, the truckers were travelling from Eckville to Sylvan Lake when Mounties say a pickup truck pulled in front of the lead truck, effectively "blocking the convoy."

Police claim Glen Daniel Carritt, 56, exited the truck he was driving at the head of the convoy, and approached the driver of the pickup before an altercation ensued.

Carritt is a former Innisfail councillor who was defeated in an effort to become the town's mayor in last October's election.

He has been a vocal opponent of COVID-19 measures and was a lead organizer for the 2019 United We Roll truck convoy that trucked to Ottawa.

He is scheduled to answer the charges in Red Deer Provincial Court on May 18.

His lawyer told CTV News he plans to fight the charges.

"Mr Carritt maintains his innocence and hopes these charges are not politically motivated and looks forward to clearing his good name in court," said Maurice Collard.

"Mr Carritt will not be stopped in his ongoing fight for the freedom and liberties of all Albertans."

Police say officers also issued a ticket to the driver of the pickup for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

Mounties ask motorists and pedestrians to remain calm and obey all laws when encountering any type of protest.

“Confronting people and committing unsafe acts only serve to further inflame the situation,” a RCMP statement reads.

“Individuals are asked to drive slowly, with increased caution and patience.”
