TORONTO - Conrad Black's tax lawyer says his client is no longer being investigated by the Canada Revenue Agency for alleged tax evasion.

David Nathanson says the tax collection body notified him that they are dropping the criminal investigation, but still want $3 million in back taxes from the former media baron.

Black is appealing the tax charges on the grounds that the CRA was assessing him improperly as both a Canadian resident and non-resident.

The appeal won't be heard by the Tax Court of Canada for a few months.

Meanwhile, Black is awaiting a verdict on the appeal of his fraud and obstruction of justice convictions in the United States after the U.S. Supreme Court narrowed the scope of a law used in the case against him.

Black has also being targeted by the IRS, the American tax collector, for about US$71-million in alleged unpaid taxes.
