A Winnipeg mother says she was shamed for breast-feeding her daughter in a local shopping mall.

Tara Leger said she was at Portage Place Shopping Centre on Monday when her eight-month-old daughter  began to fuss.

As she began to nurse, Leger said she was approached by mall security.

“The security guard came up to me and told me that I needed to use the facilities and that I was being offensive to others by doing what I was doing,” Leger told CTV Winnipeg.

“I told them that I was fine where I was.”

CTV could not reach the mall’s general manager, but Leger said she has been sent two emails apologizing for what happened.

The manager also vowed to work on better training his staff, she said.

Following the incident, Leger is encouraging other moms to stand up for themselves and know their rights.
