Winter has arrived with full force in some parts of Manitoba and British Columbia, causing transportation delays, school closures and widespread misery.

Southern Manitoba was hit hard by a winter storm on Tuesday and more snow accumulation is expected throughout the day Wednesday.  Winnipeg, Brandon, Killarney and Portage la Prairie, as well as their surrounding areas, are all under blowing snow advisories, according to Environment Canada.

Tuesday’s storm led to a temporary closure of a portion of the Trans-Canada Highway near the Saskatchewan border, and numerous school closures in the Winnipeg area. By the time the weather system passes through southern Manitoba, residents in some areas could be shoveling as much as 30 centimetres of snow.

Meanwhile, B.C.’s South Coast is bracing for a second blast of wintry weather this week. Some parts of the region saw plenty of snow on Monday, and Environment Canada has issued warnings about more “significant” snowfall expected on Thursday.

Forecasters say the incoming storm will hit the South Coast late Thursday afternoon and last throughout Friday morning. Some areas could see up to 15 centimetres of snow, and temperatures are also expected to dip as cold Arctic air moves in.
