A Toronto girl who felt she received "too many" gifts for her birthday decided to donate the toys to less fortunate children.
Five-year-old Mia Mangos, was given 30 presents on her last birthday, and said something that surprised her parents: She didn't think she should have all the gifts.
Her father, Donny Mangos, said the tyke told him, "I bet you there are other kids that may not have gifts."
At her family's home, Mia showed CTV News' John Vennavally-Rao a pile of Christmas presents she hasn't even played with yet. Her dad said sometimes the gifts are stored in the basement and she forgets about them.
"I do have too many toys," she said, while playing with the arms of a brightly-coloured doll.
"Some kids don't get presents on their birthday."
Instead of storing the toys downstairs, her father suggested they rewrap the gifts and give them to a less fortunate child who shares the same birthday. Mia agreed, so her father set up "The Birthday Project," a website that helps match children with others whose family members may not be able to afford gifts.
"Our goal is to match these 2 kids to each other to make sure that they both have a happy birthday," the website reads.
"Every kid should have a present to open on their birthday, and every kid can learn something about generosity along the way."
The Mangos family is working with local community centres to find kids with roughly the same birthdays.
They've also found several neighbours and friends willing to donate gifts. One of the donors is Mia's friend, toddler Lila Tringas, who will be donating all of her birthday gifts to the charity.
"She's on board and she feels very empathetic toward people who have less," her father Gus Tringas said.
