Sen. Vivienne Poy, the sister-in-law to former Gov. Gen. Adrienne Clarkson, has retired from the Red Chamber.
Poy quietly announced the news earlier this week on her website, finishing her duties on Monday.
The announcement marks the completion of 14 years of service in the Senate for Poy, who was first appointed in 1998 on the recommendation of former prime minister Jean Chretien.
A statement on Poy’s website said she is leaving the Senate to become “a full-time writer and globetrotter,” and to spend more time with her family.
Her biography describes her as an author, entrepreneur, fashion designer and historian. Poy also served as chancellor of the University of Toronto from 2003 to 2006.
The Hong Kong-born Poy is credited as the first Canadian of Asian descent to be appointed to the Senate.
