The suspense continues as the elusive winner of Lotto 6/49’s $13.8 million jackpot wishes to remain anonymous for at least another day.

The winner is reported to be a 78-year-old retired bachelor from Bell Island, Nova Scotia, on the southern shore of Nova Scotia.

CTV Atlantic spoke to the man’s younger brother on Friday. The winner has apparently not slept a wink since he checked his winning ticket after Wednesday’s draw.

The retired senior says he had a feeling he was the winner, but wasn’t 100 per cent sure until he walked into the Bridgewater Pharmasave Friday morning for confirmation of his ticket.

The Bridgewater Pharmasave – where the fisherman bought the ticket – said the winning ticket was validated Friday morning at the pharmacy. Since the Bridgewater Pharmasave both sold and validated the ticket, the store will receive a 1 per cent seller’s prize of about $138,805.

Atlantic Lottery says its office has heard from a person who believes he has the ticket, but the individual must show up at the office with the ticket to confirm they are the winner and then pick up the $13.8 million cheque.

The younger brother – who also doesn’t want to be identified – said his brother has not decided what to do with the money.

One Bridgewater resident who works at the Pharmasave on Friday said she has no idea who won the lottery, but is happy for him.

“I ‘m really excited for them. I hope they make good use of it,” she added.

While the rest of this small town was buzzing with excitement, the fisherman and his brother left town on Friday to attend the 18th annual Scarecrow Festival & Antique Fair in nearby Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia.
