Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in after a series of incidents near Kingston, Ont. left six different crime scenes and two men dead Wednesday evening.

In a statement released Thursday afternoon, the SIU said they are probing the circumstances surrounding the death of a 59-year-old man, who they deemed “a suspect in a string of violent incidents during the day.”

Ontario Provincial Police have confirmed few details about the incidents. CTV Ottawa’s Katie Griffin reports police are only saying that they responded to a call around 5 p.m. local time for a “serious incident” at the post office in Tamworth, about 30 km north of Napanee.

In the statement, the SIU said an OPP officer located a vehicle connected to a “male individual who was wanted by police” just before 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

When the officer got out of his cruiser and approached the vehicle, a gunshot was heard, the SIU said.

Other officers were called to the scene, where a man was later found dead a short distance away from the vehicle.

The post office is one of six scenes involved in the investigation, including a local fire hall, as well as other locations along County Road 15, including residences.

In addition to the two men who were killed, a man and a woman were taken to hospital with unknown injuries.

Residents said they heard gunshots in the area of the post office Wednesday evening, Griffin reported. However, police have not confirmed that information.

The SIU is called in to investigate police incidents that result in injury or death.

The incident has shaken the small town of Tamworth.

Tamworth restaurant owner Angie Fowler told CTV Ottawa Thursday that residents are shocked over what’s transpired.

“When something like this does happen in your community, it does shake you, but we will pull together and get through it,” she said.

Fowler said she knew the alleged gunman “for years.”

“It’s very shocking that something like this, he would be involved in,” she said.

On Facebook, local resident Tim Kidd, said there are “no words” to describe what happened on Wednesday.

“Feels like something straight out of a movie … Hug your kids/wife/husband, tell your family you love them because you never know when it could be the last time,” he wrote in a post early Thursday morning.

The motive is not clear at this point, but reports indicate the violence may have been sparked over a land dispute.
