SIMCOE, Ont. - Provincial police say a dog lover in Simcoe, Ont., lost $1,500 to a so-called "puppy scam."

They say the Simcoe resident found an online ad for a French Mastiff puppy for sale, and began communicating with the seller last month.

Investigators say the seller said she was currently in North Bay, Ont., and requested a $500 deposit for the dog, with the rest of the balance to be paid later.

They say the animal was then apparently shipped by plane to the John C. Munro Airport in Hamilton, at which time the remaining $1,000 was paid.

But police say the unsuspecting buyer called the airport after transferring the money, and the puppy never arrived.

Police are warning people to be vigilant when searching websites for animals for sale.
