A pilot and a passenger of a small plane are safe after making a landing in an Ottawa field on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency responders said the plane landed around 2 p.m. at the Greenbelt Research Farm between Woodroffe Avenue and Greenbank Road.

Officials did not immediately confirm why the pilot had to bring the plane down short of the airport. However, the pilot had reported engine trouble prior to the landing.

Firefighters had to walk through knee-deep snow to reach the plane and used snowmobiles to transport the pilot and passenger out of the field.

Marc Messier, of the Ottawa Fire Services, said in a tweet that the plane landed upright and did not suffer any structural damage.

No injuries were reported.

Both Ottawa police and the Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
