Defence Minister Peter MacKay and his wife Nazanin Afshin-Jam MacKay are expecting their first child, the politician announced on Friday.
The 46-year-old federal cabinet minister announced his growing family in a Facebook post, saying only that the child is expected in the spring.
“I am excited by the prospects of raising a child with my loving wife, along with the support of family and friends in the greatest country on earth,” MacKay wrote.
“We are simply overjoyed and wish to share our happiness with all of you. We greatly appreciate the kindness extended to us since our marriage. We look forward to introducing you to the new member of the family in the new year.”
The couple was married in Mexico on January 4.
Afshin-Jam MacKay, 33, is a former Miss World Canada who finished second at the 2003 Miss World pageant behind Miss Ireland.
Born in Iran, Afshin-Jam immigrated to Canada in 1981. She made the transition from beauty queen to social activist, speaking out about human rights issues in Iran and elsewhere. She co-founded Stop Child Executions, which aims to stop the execution of minors in Iran.
She also writes and records her own music.
