MONTREAL -- Nick Discepola, a former Quebec Liberal MP and former mayor of the city of Kirkland, Que., has died at the age of 62.

He was first elected in 1993 in in the riding of Vaudreuil and then Vaudreuil-Soulanges in 1997 and held that seat until being defeated by a Bloc Quebecois candidate in 2004.

Discepola, who was born in Italy, also served as mayor of the west-end Montreal suburb of Kirkland from 1989 to 1993.

In a statement, interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae said Discepola`s "contributions to Parliament, his community and Quebecers will live on for years to come."

A cause of death was not revealed.
