An RCMP constable who helped stop an attack by an armed man on Parliament Hill is among dozens of people being honoured in Ottawa for their acts of courage and bravery.

Const. Curtis Barrett accepted the Star of Courage at Rideau Hall Friday, for his role in stopping a deadly shooting on Parliament Hill.

On Oct. 22, 2014, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau was gunned down by Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers and six RCMP officers in Centre Block after fatal shooting of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, who was standing guard at the Canadian National War Memorial.

Other members of the RCMP and House of Commons Protective Service received decorations for their role in stopping the attack at a ceremony at the Rideau Hall back in February, but Barrett could not attend.

At Friday’s ceremony, Governor General David Johnston presented 2 Stars of Courage, which recognize “acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme peril,” as well as 41 Medals of Bravery, which recognize “acts of bravery in hazardous circumstances.”

Among those who received a Medal of Bravery is Ronald James Andersen, who rescued two people after their snowmobile plunged into the ice at Nain Bay, N.L. in 2015. Anderson, of Labrador, was snowmobiling when he saw another vehicle fall through the ice.

He was able to pull one of the passengers out of the frigid waters by her jacket, and threw a rope to the other.
