Passengers on a Delta flight from New York to Iceland have been forced to cool their heels at the military airport in Goose Bay, N.L., due to bad weather near their destination.

The airline says 183 passengers on Delta Flight 446 are being provided with refreshments and opportunities to get out of the plane in Goose Bay, as they wait out the "deteriorating weather conditions" around Keflavik airport in Iceland. A thick blanket of fog hung over the Iceland airport early Wednesday.

Delta apologized for the delay in a statement, and said it will offer customers "a gesture of service recovery."

A passenger tweeted earlier in the day that he and others were forced to stay on the plane for several hours, and given only muffins and water during the wait.

Delta says a fresh flight crew has been dispatched to operate the plane for the remainder of its flight.
