A Calgary woman has been found guilty of infanticide in the deaths of two of her babies.
A judge found Meredith Borowiec not guilty of murder, but guilty of the lesser charge of infanticide, which carries a maximum penalty of five years, CTV Calgary’s Elissa Carpenter reports.
Borowiec, 32, was charged with second-degree murder in the deaths of two newborns in 2008 and 2009. She was charged after a third child was found alive in a dumpster in October 2010.
Judge Peter McIntyre said that although the Crown had proven that Borowiec was responsible for the infants’ deaths, she was not in the right mind after childbirth and could not be convicted of murder.
A sentencing date will be set on Friday.
During Borowiec’s trial, a police officer told court that she watched as the third baby was rescued from a trash bin in 2010.
Const. David Hsu testified that he became suspicious after noticing blood on the woman’s coat sleeve and leg.
Borowiec’s boyfriend helped rescue the infant, apparently not knowing it was his child.
Borowiec faces a separate trial on an attempted murder charge in relation to that incident.
