A group of bystanders came to the rescue of a young family after their truck slammed into a tree in a southwestern Ontario town earlier this week. They managed to save the father and his two-month-old daughter before the vehicle burst into flames, killing the 25-year-old mother.

Now, authorities and a pair of those bystanders are hoping to find the unknown truck driver who stopped to help.

Joan and Rick Fisk told CTV Kitchener on Thursday that a pickup truck slammed into a tree on their front yard in the town of Minto, Ont. on Wednesday night.

“Everything happened so quickly,” Joan recalled.

According to Wellington County OPP, the truck was travelling west on Highway 9 near Ayton Line when it drove off the road and crashed into the tree at around 11:30 p.m. local time.

The Fisks said they rushed over to the site of the crash along with an unknown truck driver who had also stopped to help.

Trapped inside the truck were 25-year-old Jodi Lynn Whitehead, her 21-year-old husband and their infant daughter.

“We didn’t know that there was a baby in there but she started crying very loudly,” Joan said.

The vehicle was already burning and Rick and the other man had to work quickly to rescue the family inside.

“The truck driver climbed in and Rick held him by the legs and was able to pull both of them out,” Joan said.

They managed to drag the young man and the little baby to safety.

“We were pulling on him and he was really wedged in there and I was afraid we were not going to get him out,” Rick said.

The Fisks said there just wasn’t enough time to save Whitehead before the truck burst into flames.

“The truck was going to blow anytime and shortly thereafter it did,” Rick said. “The heat got so unbearable we just couldn’t get her out.”

Jodi Lynn Whitehead, of Bruce County, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Although they weren’t able to save everyone inside the vehicle, the Fisks believe they might not have been able to rescue anyone without the help of the truck driver.

“If he hadn’t stopped and helped, I don’t know if we would have been able to get the people out that we did,” Joan said.

Both the Fisks and the OPP are hoping to contact the truck driver who helped in the rescue.

The father was airlifted to a hospital in Hamilton with serious injuries. His baby girl suffered minor injuries.
