Flames fire Gulutzan, two assistants Glenn Campbell reports on Calgary Flames decision to let go head coach Glen Gulutzan and assistant coaches Dave Cameron and Paul Jerrard.

The Calgary Flames have parted ways with head coach Glen Gulutzan and assistant coaches Dave Cameron and Paul Jerrard following a disappointing season.

The organization announced the move Tuesday afternoon following a 2017-2018 season that saw the team finish outside the playoffs with a 37-35-10 record.

“The shortcomings of our season are not solely placed on the three coaches today,”  said Calgary Flames GM Brad Trelving. “Accountability lies with all of us.”

“There is lots of blame to go around.”

Gulutzan was named the team's head coach in June 2016 after spending three years as an assistant coach with the Vancouver Canucks. The outgoing bench boss had one year remaining on his contract with the Flames at the time of his dismissal.

“Glen’s a good coach. Glen’s a wonderful person. We didn’t get our team to the point that I think we needed to.”

Treliving says the decision to relieve the coaches of their duties was not a simple one. “They were assets to our organization. They were assets to our community. These are never easy decisions and they are made more difficult by the character of these individuals.”

According to Treliving, the dismissal of the coaches does not let anyone off the hook, including him, following a disappointing season. "You are what your record says you are," said Treliving. "Ultimately, it's my responsibility to get it right."

Treliving says he does not anticipate any additional moves involving the remaining members of the Flames' coaching staff as the team begins the process of hiring a new coach. The Flames GM says there are 'lots of candidates'  for the position but did not divulge any names.
