Wildfire north of Calgary prompts evacuation alert, highway closures

Wildfire burning out of control There is a wildfire burning out of control in a remote area west of Water Valley Wednesday night.

The out of control wildfire burning west of Water Valley has been resized to 83 hectares, smaller than initial estimates.

But a state of emergency remains and residents are on evacuation alert.

About two dozen firefighters, helicopters and water trucks are working around the clock.

Thursday's cooler, wetter weather is also helping.

On Thursday afternoon, the MD of Bighorn issued a statement on its website:

"The MD of Bighorn recognizes that this is a difficult situation for everyone impacted by the area and road closures," it said.

"The MD of Bighorn has created a restricted area entry form for persons and businesses needing to retrieve personal belongings or access their business from the road closures.

"We appreciate your understanding and we are striving to keep everyone safe during this time."
