Toronto man charged in extortion of Oyen, Alta., youth

A Toronto man faces charges in relation to an online extortion attempt of a rural Alberta youth.

In December, 2024, Oyen RCMP received a report that a youth from that community had been the victim of an online extortion.

Following an investigation, which involved obtaining access to a suspect’s social media, email and banking accounts, a North York man was arrested after Toronto police executed a search warrant on his home.

The 24-year-old man was charged with making sexually explicit material available to a child; extortion; possession of child pornography; accessing child pornography and distributing child pornography.

The man is set to appear in court in Toronto on May 30.
