Thunderstorms possible Tuesday with more rain expected this week

A slow-moving upper pattern will produce intermittent showers and thunderstorms across a large portion of central and southern Alberta for most of the week.

For the first part of the day Tuesday, the heaviest accumulations are initially likely to be near Edmonton, with enhanced instability expected to develop in southern Alberta and along the foothills as the day progresses.

As of 7 a.m., Tuesday special weather statements had been issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada for some higher elevation highways in southern British Columbia due to “wet snow near highway summits.”

The national weather agency further explains, “A cool airmass has settled over British Columbia with snow falling over the interior highway passes.“

Temperatures will remain slightly suppressed in Calgary until the weekend with daytime highs likely to peak at 16 C on Friday and sit around 14 C to 15 C Tuesday through Thursday.

This cooler weather will help limit the severity of thunderstorm development, however convective activity is still likely.

By Saturday, the daytime highs will climb back to above seasonal values, ranging from 19 C to 26 C until at least the middle of next week.
