Racing team raises funds for Calgary cancer support group

Kelly Fedorowich, her husband David and their son Nikolas own Dark Side Racing, which boasts a 10,000 horsepower nitro-burning top fuel dragster.

The family lived the nomadic lifestyle of a drag racing team and competed all over the United States while Nikolas was still little.

When he reached school age they decided to settle in Calgary and make the Castrol Raceway near Edmonton their home track.

“It was because of meeting David that I was introduced to the world of professional drag racing and I think the moment that I saw his race car I knew that it was something I could do, I knew that it was something I wanted to do,” said Kelly.

Kelly hopes to become the fastest woman in Canada in one eighth of a mile or just over 200 meters.

“By the time I get up to an eighth mile pass I’m gonna be hitting about 275 miles per hour 280 miles per hour,” she said.

The Fedorowich team proudly displays the logo of PROSTAID Calgary on their dragster and trailer and David says it's for a very good reason.

“I've had prostate cancer twice now and they've been very good to me and so has the medical system in Alberta and Canada, so we're trying to pay it back just a little bit,” said David.

The family’s relationship with PROSTAID Calgary resulted in Kelly being asked to take the position of executive director.

Dark Side Racing's major sponsor is Calgary Harley Davidson, which now also does fund raising for the cancer support group.

Nikolas left a career in the food service industry to join the family business and he says it's great to work with the two people you know best.

“It's trust, it's that familiarity and it's that bond that's always there and you know your back's always covered and you're always working together  to achieve the same goals,” said Nikolas.
