Police investigate shooting at Cochrane area cemetery

Police confirm four males suffering from gunshot wounds are being treated in Calgary area hospitals after a shooting at a cemetery west of the city.

Police were called to the Muslim Cemetery on Mountain Ridge Place, off of Highway 1A, at 3:35 p.m. for reports of shots fired.

Four people were taken to Foothills Hospital in Calgary with gunshot wounds and police say their injuries are non life-threatening.

RCMP say there was a funeral at the facility and that a group of people remained after the service and it is believed that's when the shooting happened.

“There was a funeral today and we do believe that it had just wrapped up however we don’t know if it’s connected at this time,” said RCMP Constable Jennifer Brewer.

Zouheir Osman is in charge of the Muslim Cemetery and says there was a service for a 21-year-old man at the facility at about 2:15 p.m. and that he believes the shooting was racially motivated.

“The news I got is that someone was sitting in one of the trees shooting at the people that were inside the cemetery,” said Osman.

"It looks as though all the parties involved were at this funeral," said Cpl Sharon Franks. "All of the injured parties are of the same race and we do not believe this was racially motivated."

Police say the victims transported themselves to hospital and that they believe the attack was not random.

RCMP say there is no immediate danger to the public and they have no suspects in custody.
