Man charged with first-degree murder in medical clinic stabbing

Calgary police have charged a man with first-degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of another man at a medical clinic on Thursday afternoon.

At about 2:35 p.m., police were called to respond to a medical clinic in the Central Landmark building on Centre Street at 16 Avenue N after someone was spotted walking inside carrying a knife.

When police arrived, they found one person dead and two others suffering from non-life threatening injuries.

A woman was taken to hospital where she was treated and relseased and a man was treated at the scene and taken into custody.

“The female that was injured at the clinic we believe was injured during the chaos of the event. We’re not sure how she was injured, it is minor in nature, but we don’t believe she was an intended target,” said Inspector Don Coleman, of the CPS Major Crimes Unit.

Police say all three people knew each other and that the man in custody and woman in hospital were in a relationship at one point.

“It would appear that the accused wanted to confront the doctor in relation to his perception of some type of relationship between the doctor and the accused’s wife,” said Coleman.

The victim has been identified as Tiejun Huang, 51 and officials say that he died as a result of a stabbing.

The suspect, Jin Qing Huang, 42, is charged with first-degree murder. He is not believed to be related to the victim, despite having the same last name.

“I believe he was quite agitated, attended the clinic and searched out the doctor and engaged in a verbal altercation, which ultimately led to the physical confrontation and the stabbing of the victim,” said Inspector Coleman.

Huang is Calgary's 11th homicide victim of 2016.
