Lethbridge first responders offer tips on what to do in the event of a minor vehicle collision

First responders in Lethbridge are reminding drivers what to do if they get into a minor vehicle collision, after several close calls where cars were left in live traffic lanes were reported.

Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services reminds everyone to prioritize safety.

That includes ensuring no one is hurt.

Once that’s done, officials say if the vehicles can be driven safely, move them to an area that’s out of the way, such as a parking lot or the road shoulder.

It’s important to collect and exchange information such as names, phone numbers, insurance and vehicle details such as licence plate numbers and the make and model.

Officials say it is vital to pay attention at all times while driving.

“When we do have a scene, it’s also important that you slow down to what the laws are and that protects the people that are on scene and the citizens that need our help,” said Shawn Folk, Lethbridge Fire and EMS platoon chief.

“Just pay attention. No more distracted driving. I think that is a big offender—I see it personally and I see it professionally, especially when they come screaming by a scene, and like I said, we’ve had way too many close calls so we’re asking the public for their help in assisting and paying attention when we do have motor vehicle collisions.”

Police say if damage is more than $5,000, a collision report must be filled out at the collision reporting centre.
