‘It’s incredibly tough:’ Family mourns victim of deadly Calgary stabbing

The family of Calgary's latest homicide victim is seeking answers—and asking anyone who knows what happened to come forward to police.

The family of Jonas Robert Nedd Sutton is searching for answers after the 21-year-old was killed on Saturday morning outside a downtown Calgary bar.

Family members say Sutton was with a friend at Commonwealth Bar & Stage on 10 Avenue S.W.

After they left, family say Sutton and his friend were surrounded by a group of people in a parking lot just before 2 a.m.

“It’s an incredible loss for us,” said Jonas’ brother Matthew.

“(He) was a fantastic individual with so much love to give, and he’s going to be missed a lot.”

Calgary police were initially called to reports of a large brawl.

Officers arrived to find three people injured.

Sutton was pronounced dead upon arriving at the hospital.

A second person was transported to hospital in stable condition, while the third person has since been released.

“(From) everything we see, it started outside,” said Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson said Tuesday when asked if the initial interaction began inside the bar.

“No charges have been laid on that incident. We did have people that we questioned on early Saturday morning into the day. They’ve since been released. That investigation continues.”

‘Get the justice he deserves’

Sutton’s brother Matthew says the young man was passionate about music and streaming.

“He really strived for his own independence and to not be a burden to anybody,” he said.

“I just want (him) to get the justice he deserves, because he just wanted to protect his friend and make it home safe, but he didn’t get that lucky.”

Sutton and his brother were roommates for the last four years.

Matthew says he recalls getting a knock on the door from police.

“I thought he was just in trouble with something. That was the first thing I was worried about, was like, ‘Oh, what? What did Jonas do?’ But I wish now that that would have been the case,” he said.

“Just kind of walking by and just seeing his room. I can’t even bear to have the door open. Just leave it closed. It’s incredibly, it’s incredibly tough.”

Sutton’s other brother Jordan says the entire family has been devastated by the news.

“It’s senseless, regardless,” Jordan said.

“But I don’t want him to be remembered in a sad way. I want him to be remembered positively.”

He says Sutton was a positive young man who recently purchased an Audi, his dream car.

His brothers both say Sutton he loved to sing and was passionate about music.

“He was not out there maliciously doing anything,” Jordan said.

“He was just out dancing, looking for girls, whatever – and now instead, it’s like because of ego and alcohol or whatever, his life’s been cut short now.”

With no charges laid, Sutton’s brothers are hopeful someone has information that can help police.

“Please come forward. Let us know what happened to my baby brother,” said Matthew. “Anything helps. I just want to know. He just was alone when he died, and nobody seems to know too much information. I just want to know what happened to him and what his last moments were like.”

The family has started a GoFundMe campaign, raising donations for funeral expenses.

Police are asking any witnesses with dashcam, CCTV or cellphone footage from around the time of the incident to call police at 403-266-1234.
