Here’s where Calgary’s current flood risk sits, according to city officials

The City of Calgary says with the mountain snowpack below average, the chance of flooding in Calgary is considered normal.

The City of Calgary has shared some positive news when it comes to the chance of flooding this year.

Thursday marked the start of Calgary’s “flood season” – a two-month period when river flooding is the most likely to occur.

In a news release, the city said the potential for flooding this year is considered “normal.”

“We’re ready to respond if we need to,” said Sandy Davis, the city’s river engineering leader.

“The city’s annual flood preparations are complete and we’re now monitoring weather and river conditions 24/7.”

It was 12 years ago, in June 2013, that Calgary experienced historic and devastating flooding.

Since then, the city has worked to prevent a similar occurrence through several flood mitigation projects.

On Thursday, the city said Calgary has now achieved a 70 per cent reduction in flood risk exposure.

“What this really means is that we have eliminated 70 per cent of the amount of damages we can expect from flooding going forward,” says Frank Frigo, manager of environmental management.

“Though there’s still more that needs to be done to protect communities that remain vulnerable to flooding, our city’s overall resilience has come a long way.”
