Calgary weather: Daytime highs will drop to -17 C next weekend

Friday will be mild with a daytime high of 2 C in Calgary. While there has been a lot of melting this week there is still some snow and ice – including back alleys, parking lots, and areas not in direct sunlight.

A freeze-thaw cycle will continue into early next week where there is measurable accumulation.

Conditions over the next five-days will be above seasonal with a mix of sun and cloud, and large temperature fluctuations day-over-day.

The wind in Calgary will be mild Friday and stronger on Saturday with a high of 11 C.

Over the past week the upper pattern has included persistently steep atmospheric waves resulting in dramatically different weather conditions across the country. While central Canada has experienced unusually cold and snowy conditions – the west has been crushing record high temperatures.

This will start to moderate at the end of the weekend and totally reverse in the west by the end of next week.

An intense polar vortex that has been meandering south over Ontario will start to swing back into northern Canada midweek before spreading west.

Daytime highs in Calgary by the end of next week are expected to sit closer to average overnight lows.

The normal range of temperatures in Calgary this time of year is -3 C for a high and -15 C for the low.
