Calgary Horticultural Society shares a few tips about how to be water-wise with your yard

Calgarians are encouraged to economize their water use and plant in ways to reduce the flow of water off their property this gardening season.

The City of Calgary and Calgary Horticultural Society offered people a few tips on how to get yard smart Saturday.

At an event held in Richmond Green Park in the southwest, members of the horticultural society offered tips on water-wise gardening, and how to create a beautiful, low-maintenance yard that will thrive in Calgary.

“We’re just here to give advice and to, you know, partake of the event,” said Kathy Smyth, from the Calgary Horticultural Society.

“What it involves is trying to plant differently,” she said. “Trying to control the flow of the water off your property.

“What we try to do is talk about and do programs where we introduce the fact that if you plant certain plants, and if you plant in certain ways, we manage to get a message across about water-wise (gardening).”

Smyth said her water wisdom comes from personal experience.

“We should be working towards economizing on water,” she said. “And I myself, I keep buckets in my shower, and I use that to water some of my garden.

“I’ve always gathered and kept waste water in my kitchen. And really and truly, it’s just a question of not turning the sprinkler on and leaving it on.”

The event ended at 2 p.m.
